WHAT IS DAN?

DAN stands for Divers Alert Network, or as it is familiarly known the diver's safety net.

DAN was born in 1980 following the initiative of certain scientists and university professors of international standing, in the USA and in Italy, who had understood that the managing of a diving emergency requires a special knowledge, not commonly found as part of normal medical structures.

 

 

DAN's MISSION

DAN's mission is that of operating and maintaining an international network of alarm centers, active 24 hours a day, guaranteeing, in the event of an emergency, specialized assistance, to any diver, anywhere in the world.

DAN also provides diving medical advice, carries out research into diving safety, organizes courses

and seminars with the aim of increasing the knowledge and sense of responsibility of recreational divers and provides financial and technical assistance to hyperbaric treatment centers in developing countries.

The international DAN network is formed by independent non-profit organizations (DAN America, DAN Europe, DAN Japan, DAN Southern Africa, DAN South East Asia Pacific) who, maintaining themselves through the fees paid by their own members, guarantees to divers the best world-wide assistance.

The five principal alarm Centers are in Australia, located at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. In Europe at the DAN Europe Travel Assist Alarm Center in Milan, Italy, in Japan at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Tokyo and in the United States at the Duke University, Medical Center of Durham, North Carolina and in South Africa in Johannesburg.

In Europe DAN has activated a net of regional alarm centers corresponding to the diverse linguistic areas, directed by the best known national specialists, working in co-ordination with the DAN Europe Central Office and International DAN. DAN Europe's responsibilities extends also to the Middle East and the Indian Ocean, where there are three alarm centers in Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt and in the Maldives.

” FAMILY ASSISTANCE PLAN - DAN TRAVEL ASSIST

All individual DAN members can extend the DAN Travel Assist Services to the following members of their family:

·          Spouse or legal cohabitator

·          Child if unmarried and under 18 years old or unmarried

·          Child who is 18 years old an older up to his/her 23rd birthday if that child: is enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited school or college/university, in not employed on a full-time basis and has the same permanent home address as the parent

The Family Plan is not advisable for diving family members because diving accidents are not covered!

Family Membership provides DAN Travel Assist services to every individual listed on a family DAN membership. Each family member will have his/her own FAMILY CARD. They do not need to travel as a group.
